Day 4 | Night| The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Xard had forgotten eating existed. He had spent whole day by Sinsei's bed, refusing to budge, until Dr Yueh had appealed to his respect for Imperial expertise, like a doctor to a doctor, by telling him that by desiccating himself further he would undo the medical work. Anxious and brooding, he had dragged himself to the kitchens, or rather had let be dragged by some Atreides guardsperson. There, he had found an excellent beef waiting, and then moved with a slice of it to the dining hall. Taken aback by the decor of the place, he had still sat in a random undistinguished chair along the table and started nibbling, trying to reacquaint himself with the life-preserving functionality. It wasn't that hard, he had discovered, for the food was excellent, as if a Mutelli chef had prepared it.

Between the severe Duke in the traje de luces and the grotesque Salusan bullhead, he chose to stare at the blue-black Hagal obsidian covering the ceiling. He wouldn't say the Atreides had a good aesthetic taste in balancing styles, but this visual ersatz of the cosmos, the only classy thing in the whole castle, was bringing him some small measure of reprieve, putting his own personal drama in a perspective.

A woman approached carrying a full carafe and a pair of empty glasses.

"I am relieved to see you eating, Dr. Vim." She offered a gentle smile. "You need to recover your strength, for her."

"Dr Yueh said something similar." Xard replied quietly, climbing from his seat for a polite greeting. He was a man of manners. "I am very grateful for you part in keeping my daughter alive, though to my shame I have to admit I don't have a firm idea yet what expression to give to this gratitude."

"Xard Vim, in the service of House Corrino." The planetologist went through the redundant self-presentation for the sake of decorum. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Ms Gray. Let's sit and have the conversion."

"Thank you, I am in no position to turn down such a generous commitment, as desperate as I am now. I suppose we should retrieve our work at some point... Do you have an interest in planetology, or just in something about Caladan?"

"It is a relatively new interest. " she admitted. "I visited Arrakis not too long ago and was amazed by its unique ecology. The worms leave an impression. But, so do the manta birds here on Caladan."

Xard's thoughts started sliding into professional considerations.

"Oh, have you met dr Kynes?"

"Mostly from his papers and reports, though he pops up on Kaitain once in a long while if he really needs something from the Emperor to keep going. I think we had spice coffee together once. He really prefers the desert over people." Xard scratched his beard. "He's basically inherited the job from his father, dr Pardot Kynes. The Padishah Emperor was so unconcerned with it that he didn't even make a problem of this act of nepotism, even though Kynes is mostly self-taught and just showed up one day with his doctorate to defend it. I think his mother was native. We respect him, he has this aura you can read about in history books about the first, trailblazing planetologists of the Old Imperium. But, how shall I put it, he's still a bit of an oddball. And some people make fun of his accent and other idiosyncrasies."

Xard smiled painfully, though he tried to keep his tone light. "I must admit some jealousy, or hurt pride there. My daughter is a gobbler for whatever he publishes."

"She was quite interested in my experiences on Arrakis and hopeful that she'll see ot for herself in time." She smiled. "I had some interaction with the Fremen. And now, having seen the Muadh of Caladan, I've grown curious about the Zensunni and what ties I may have to them."

Xard scratched his beard again. "I have some anthropological inclinations, but at this comparative scale? Let me think." He chewed on some beef, and that apparently brought out and angle.

"We probably need to look back to the times of the Butlerian Jihad as the moment of greatest distortion of social fabric across the Known Universe. Buddislamics before that time had been pacifistic, fatalistic even, especially after the Second Muhammad. The Muadh could continue this strain of thought during the Corrino Imperium precisely because Caladan had been on the margins of our existential conflict with the Machines. In the League Worlds, often beleaguered, Buddislamics were considered disloyal for their refusal to take up arms against the Machines. They were stripped of civic rights, persecuted, oppressed and enslaved. It was a bad time for being a conscientious objector. Pogroms and slave raids happened, and the worst cases of exploitation of Zensunni and Zenshia slaves happened on the world that was the industrial and scientific base of the League - Poritrin. The very same Tio Holtzman worked on. The Zenshia entrenched, mostly on IV Anbar, but the Zensunni were rebelling, also on Poritrin, fleeing and dispersing, ending on a plethora of worlds, treating some of them as mere stopovers. Rossak, Bela Tegeuse, Harmonthep, and Arrakis, among others. But I think only on Arrakis did they take environmental pressures and teachings of Maometh to the inflection point of breaking away from pacifism, adopting the militant tribal culture that is now the Fremen. Hence, while cross-fertilisation of those traditions may have happened over the millennia, and the memory of the Wanderings may be shared, Zensunni on Arrakis and Zensunni elsewhere are rather distinct. And the Muadh, as cloistered as they are on Caladan, may have only a very distant overlap in dogma and religious practice with the Zensunni."

Xard stopped to check if he wasn't a bore.

"A comparison between Caladan, Harmonthep and Arrakis would be interesting." She suggested. "How different environments influenced those descended from the same culture. How they adapted. How they live. What they eat."

"Other than that last part, it's all a bit beyond a chef like myself." She laughed. "I didn't know anything about my own Zensunni ancestry until relatively recently."

To the ancestry issue, Xard nodded with understanding. Those things could have turned out tricky for any bloodline, distinguished or not. However, that was more Bene Gesserit domain, not his, so he couldn't offer much. Especially that the task Cuyler had put before him wasn't an easy one.

"Let's see, in the broadest terms, Harmonthep, being mostly an open flatland accessible to political authorities thirsty for indentured labour, has been the one where the Zensunni must have had the least autonomy and were the most exposed to cultural currents of the wider Imperium. However, the extraction of most local resources depends on some initiative and freedom of movement, so the Hagal rule hasn't been oppressive enough to make the masses develop much of a psychic muscle. I wouldn't describe any slavery as benign, but the one on Harmonthep gets away with 'bread and circuses' for population control. The climate across the Sea of Reeds is very stable, as Harmonthep has virtually non-inclined, round orbit. Even if the topography is changing often across the marshlands, the living conditions are the same for the semi-nomadic Zensunni. Lack of environmental extremes usually leads to docility and habituality of religion." He hadn't been to Harmonthep in a while, but he remembered the basics.

"Now, the primitive Muadh on Caladan, share some of those features. Their near-perfect adjustment to jungle life favours pacifism, docility and entrenched habituality of religious practices without much room for zealotry. By political choices of the Atreides they do enjoy as much autonomy and self-elected isolation as any tribal community forestalling change can hope for, barring the situation we... participated in. Despite their monotheistic roots, with time they appear to have re-embraced elements of animism and shamanism, making the ecosystem a subject of their religious practices. The ones we lived among with Sinsei had developed strict cult of life, coupled with prohibitions against any violence. This was one of the reasons I returned here for the second field study - those people are natural ecological workers, with a lot of practical knowledge and conservation instincts. I probably can't say as much about the other Muadh on Caladan. Many of them have turned sedentary, embraced rural life and with it - Orange Catholicism. Ducal authorities often provide them with enough reassurance against extreme weather events for that not to be too much of a factor. But apart from rice farmers, there are also fishing and forager communities in the north, with greater levels of self-reliance and original religiosity. I think Kiran al-Sahar, my fellow captive, belongs to them. Their Buddhislam has syncretised and institutionalised, having the archvicar and lesser vicars to preside over community life. What still relatively unites most of the Muadh regardless of their habitat is the consumption of the barra fern for various rites. In mild concentrations, it strengthens neural activity in the cortex, contributing to greater empathy, collective hallucination and more vivid dreaming. In the community we lived in it was often served in a form of a light brew. In greater concentrations..."

He needed a moment. "...those effects apparently strengthen or even reach another level, though the biochemistry of the brain stops keeping up at some point, leading to strokes and haemorrhages. I have actually been the clinical patient to have given this insight to dr Yueh. I don't know yet which brain functions of mine have been compromised." He sighed, then shrugged. "There must be some quantum processes going on that connect brain activity at close distances but I am not that much of an expert on that. Sinsei has actually been better to theorise it."

He needed to pause.

"Now, Arrakis I don't know that much about. You can probably offer some of your own insights, or wait until Sinsei wakes up, she's been reading Kynes. What I can hypothesise from rough planetological models is that the unmitigated hostility of the environment, brutality of the occupants and enough wilderness to escape subjugation and control must have led those Zensunni to sharpen the strictures and creeds of their religion, what they call ilm and fiqh. They are probably quite nomadic and well-trained survivalists. I wouldn't exclude zealotry and fanaticism, deserts are often credited to be wombs of raw religions. When we apply the law of the minimum to them, seeking the least present enabler of life, that would surely be water. It must be playing an important role in their overall culture. Not sure how many of them are there, or how isolated from one another. The Imperial census says maybe several hundred thousand."

This pause was even longer. Xard struggled to give Cuyler what she asked for but was getting too tired.

"I... wouldn't put excessive credit in that sketch though. One of the things I can't control for is the Bene Gesserit messing with religions. They have the habit of inserting their Sisters into various religious communities to manipulate the course in which those religions transform. I am not sure why they do that, but no-one has ever tried to stop them. We, planetologists, aren't too happy about it, for such pollution of beliefs often skews our analyses of evolution of ecosystemic interactions by an uncomfortable margin."

She mulled it over for a silent moment. "That was very informative, thank you. I know it is not your field, but during your time with the Muadh, did you learn about their family structures. Is lineage important to them?"

Laila had an appointment with a room in an inn and the man who'd saved her life simply by placing some value on it, but she'd had to swing by to collect some loose cash to pay for the room, and then there'd been the matter of getting some gear on the list of the lighter.

If I'm going to Harmonthep as dumb muscle, no way in hell am I not having a pistol in the mix. Those carbines suck.

Then she'd gotten word that Hadrian would be a bit, and...

Is that beef?

...

Is that exquisitely cooked beef?

The Ecazi followed her nose to the kitchens, and then, when informed that eating standing up in the kitchen without using utensils was frowned upon, made her way out into the dining hall... just in time to catch some of Xard's mini-lecture.

Wait, why are they talking about Harmonthep?

"Uh... this seat taken?"

"Yes, it is, though in non-obvious ways. There are distinguishable families within the tribe that gave us shelter. Thra, Yar, Tu, and Dy. They try to keep those distinctions not just for organisational purposes like specific roles, but also to keep inbreeding under control. They have a healthy habit of allowing a trickle of outsiders to shake up their gene pool, and their descendants carry temporary family names until they join any of the families. This allows for transition of power every few generations, normally held by a theocratic duo - the Old Mother, and her groomed heir, the Young Mother. The latter status can be earned after conceiving a child with an outsider, the former - upon the death of the predecessor. In our tribe, the Young Mother is the daughter of the Old Mother, both of the Dy family, but it needn't be so. The leader's death gives an opening for transition. Young women from any family seeking the role may then show their procreative agency. I do sense the hand of the Bene Gesserit in this arrangement, however, with the titles just a little short of Reverend Mothers. No direct proof, though that particular matriarchy is rather resilient and sustainable for any Buddislamic denomination."

He then noticed Laila, and smiled, perhaps for the first time in a long while.

"Not by any of us, Laila."

She smiled back.

"Well, good. 'cause like I always say, us redheads gotta stick together."

She nodded to Cuyler.

"You must have cooked this, it smells incredible..."

Cuyler returned her attention to Xard. "I think that may be the case with the Fremen, as well. It would explain a few things. Thank you, doctor, for sharing your knowledge with me."
