Duncan was struggling to ovverride the lock on the thopter controls just as Rabban emerged onto his hill, aiming the lasgun at the thopter. Xard and Yoll had got in too, only Laila was outside and it looked like she would not make it...

Kiran grit their teeth. "Laila will be here in a second," they said as they settled into a seat, staring out the windowat their running friend. "Come on..."

Meanwhile, in the back of their head, as the lasgun rose, they begged, Please miss. Please, please miss.

Duncan nodded in agreement but didn't wait for outcomes the Harkonnen would create. He aimed the lasgun he had been holding and blasted the lieutenant's head off, completing Laila's work.

Laila dived into the thopter at full speed. Before Rabban could shoot again, they were in the air, Duncan pulling a trick he surely had not known as a kid to fly sideways to the treeline. The four of them, they were escaping! Would they be able to get off planet, the dream would not tell as their vision would soon fade to white over tears and cheers.
