"Sinsei!"

While Efren dealt with the strange man, Cuyler turned her attention to the wounded planetologist. No one was expendible. Everyone was going to make it out of this. Kneeling beside her, she examined the damage and assessed their options.

"We're going to save your father. All of us. Together."

[Group #3]

Sinsei may have ever so slightly whizzed, her body perspiring profusely and changing the tinge into yellowish.

Cuyler assumed that it was some kind of a venom; in this case, what was needed was to recline Sinsei in a way that prevented the toxin from quickly advancing along the bloodstream to the heart and squeezing hard just inches over the affected area; the nearest thing that could serve that purpose was one of the chute ropes, but by pulling on it to use it for the makeshift triage Cuyler made Marek's next move a bit easier.

[Sinsei is stabilised for now, 2 Threat to Marek's Boost.]

Marek.jpg

The revelation coming with Efren's duellist masterstroke sequestered the pain for a split-second. Atreides soldiers could do THAT?! Such leverage for Bene Tleilax if he could inform his Master! Once the Padishah Emperor knows the Atreides are being secretly trained to match the Sardaukar... and then he yelled unintelligibly once the run-through wrist could no longer be ignored.

[Marek's Shield is effectively destroyed. 8 Wounds. With Despair, Efren is moved to the end of Initiative for his second go.]

Marek de-Ensnaring. Athletics. Clever Solution (Cunning). Boost from Cuyler.: 3eP+2eA+1eB+3eD 1 failure, 4 advantage

Still, having the narrowest of openings, Marek tried to set himself free from the parachute, but for all his guile it was too much of a quagmire. He nevertheless compounded the fabric toward Efren to impede his next advance. He had utter loathing for the Atreides but could no longer dismiss his ability.

[4 Advantages to 2 Setbacks for Efren's next action against Marek]

In the process, he caught a glimpse of Cuyler and Sinsei through a tear in the fabric.

"If I die, you all die." He seethed with a dose of indifference, and it didn't sound like a bluff.

Efren weaved and attempted to crack Marek in the head with the butt of his knife. The parachute seemed to cushion the blow, however, and Efren flipped the knife in his hand towards a more aggressive posture.

"It's easy, then. You yield. We all live." He replied as he stared the man down.

Bern's speech was so motivating that for the first time since they were kids Hadrian actually looked up to his big brother. But then the hail of bullets started falling and he remembered Bern's a blowhard. Still, there was a job that needed doing and Hadrian wasn't about to let a little hail get in the way of him doing it. So he charged ahead recklessly when a lull appeared in the shooting.

Recking was what Hadrian was without in more ways than one. On the battlefield, he was proving to be the surprise factor. His shot didn't hit the target, but instead rattled some structural point that made all the front plate of the fortification flop off and slide down the hill, exposing those behind it! [Triumph: no defensive bonuses for targets from fortifications until next turn.] To say that the merc gal crouching behind it was shocked would be an understatement. Alas, he couldn't watch the glory of his doing, because he greeted the ground with his face, tripping again. [3 Threat: Prone] It wasn't a bug in Hadrian's tactics, it was a feature.

[Group #1 - 3 consecutive turns, then Ambrose. Challenge & 3 Setback from fortification don't apply to difficulties until the end of round, nor any Setback from prior cover. Commander's half-shield applies.]

The sound of a bullets riding past him shocked, his heart racing as he kept his head down and behind his cover as the bullets tore thru the tree he was using, granting him some semblance of use in its final moments. Utilizing the distraction, Bern immediately rushes towards the dropped gun, knowing full and well that getting close to that thing with his shotgun would only make his death all the more possible and locked and loaded. Taking a moment to gain a shot, he quickly fired off at shot at him, which managed to connect (somehow). He was never that good of a shot when compared with how we was with a blade, but hopefully that one would cause him some pain.

It was a headshot, though into the shielded side. The shield held it up, but the impact gonged the guy's head on something hard, making him see circling cockatoos. [3 Strain, 2 Wounds. Strain at 6. Rifle merc had not reloaded before pellets fairly ripped
And this Hadrian's aim was deadly with the shotgun from his hip

GROUP #1

All of this was unobserved by Ambrose, but what he did observe was a fortified position the cartel was establishing against the pass raiders and what he had was a solution in the form of brrrrt.

Wary of more rockets, he bobbed and weaved, zigged and zagged, and modulated his speed to throw off any enemy fire. This made it difficult to line up his sights, but what could go wrong. He just needed to paint the enemy with his strafing run and paint it he did.

His rounds struck the base of fortification, sending prefab walls, sandbags, and rocks flying from their placements and exposing the mercs. As the dust settled... he unexpectedly found them unscathed and huddled in place. They were apparently disciplined enough to build a substantial fortified position in anticipation of enemy forces coming in through the pass.

Before he could ruminate on their good fortune, he notice the aftermath of his attack sending a rock slide pouring down the far side of hill. Peering over the apex and past the cartel forces, he spotted his allies. Ambrose's heart skipped several beats and his stomach bottomed out like he'd stalled into a zero G free-fall. By sheer luck, the terrain guided the tumbling rocks to the cliff's edge so that Martikova's Marauders narrowly missed getting swept away in the onslaught. His indiscriminate attack had nearly brought an end to the Marauders.

The landslide continued on until crashing into the edge of the jungle. Ambrose could swear he caught a glimpse Lydia back there, evacuating the path of destruction while throwing up a rude gesture to his thopter. It was the gesture that convinced him of the reality of what he'd seen.

[Round #7 for Group #1]

Excess didn't bring success. Excess brought devastation. The primeval rainforest was burning, the rockslide altered the shape of the slope that must have remained intact for millennia. The ledge Lydia had been on collapsed and there was no certainty whether she survived the avalanche [Lydia is MIA, Group #1 is one initiative slot less.]. If this was the cost of dislodging the drug cartel from Caladan's most important natural preserve and the protected habitat of the Muadh, then it was a price so steep Ambrose might be having second thoughts whether it was worth paying, whether they had missed a gentler way at some point. Especially that he saw it all from this thopter, the panorama of destruction. That included the destruction of all functional fortifications, a silver lining. [No static defensive bonuses from terrain for the mercs from now on.]

And nothing Ambrose had done had prevented the mercenary force from being reinforced at the pass. 11 gunmen joined the fray, in semi-tactical distances to prevent him from targeting them en masse. [They are Extreme from Dominic and Bernard, Long from Hadrian, Medium from other Mercs, Close from Ambrose.]

Initiative: 2eA 2 successes

[New Initiative Order]

The guy who had been arming himself with a portable ground-to-air rocket launcher for the past turn was now ready to fire. However, his lack of training in this particular equipment worked to Ambrose's advantage. He immediately sought a modicum of cover afterwards.

Shooting at Bravo's Fore.: 3eA+1eC 0 successes, 2 advantage

[2 Advantage to boost their next roll.]

His boldness, however, inspired other mercs to act decisively. The commander, who couldn't regain clear vision yet, grabbed the crouching woman and pulled her to the tripod to take over their key firing position, pointing at Hadrian. [Pull from prone, pass weapon, at 8 Strain].

"Shoot him!"

The woman had little gunner experience and had much smaller frame to hold onto the monster, but didn't question the order [Manoeuvre to Aim]. She just moved the viewfinder on Hadrian and set the repeater on autofire...

Some of the bullets flew wide. But not all of them.

Shooting at Hadrian. Autofire. Cumbersome.: 3eA+2eB+3eD 2 successes, 1 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

[Hadrian is hit for 14 Damage w/ Pierce 1 and Vicious 1. Autofire not triggered.]

The machine fire tore into his chest, plucking out small plumes of blood like spews of water when the ice sheet cracks. The impact should have felled him. And yet, he stood.

The intensity of the confrontation with the Tleilaxu may have diverted Efren's and Cuyler's attention from the fact that Eileen darted back toward the antenna. Both were excused though, Sinsei was balancing on the verge of death, and Efren had to deal with a most insidious enemy whose capacity for lethality at any moment, even as disadvantaged as he was now, could not be underestimated.

Efren's intense glare focused in on the man. His memory of the cave and the family member he never knew because of this man honed his aim as he pierced through the sheet into Marek's torso. He stabbed in the stomach because he didn't want this man to die right away... his inanimate body had work to do before that came. And when it came it... he'd make sure it had purpose. This man had done too much evil to both his ancestries. He would be made to pay for everything.

The pain was delayed for just enough for Marek to reconcile with his demise. He paid no more heed to the insolent Atreides heathen. In the end he, Chaen Marek, was but a pawn in God's great plan but until now he had played his part well. Master Arafa and other Masheikhs must have already received most of his harvest and research through Rodundi, and could utilise it for the cause. Despite the damn Guild blockade of Thalim. His time among the infidels wasn't in vain. There were things to be lost with his death, no doubt, but he could consider them trivial in perspective. His major regret was that he had no way of cleansing himself of powindah filth before dying.

Efren winced at the sudden burst of rapid molecules rushing at him and jumped back from the fanatic. He turned to his friends and saw Cuyler immediately struggling to pick up Sinsei. He knew she wouldn’t easily abandon the other woman and sprinted towards them.

Seeing Kiran out, Laila almost out, and a merc struggling to get past the rubble, Duncan had a moment to do something that would plague him if he hadn't. He checked on Thra Yoll.
