Shigawire was a metallic extrusion of a vine that grew on just a couple of hostile planets. It had high tensile strength even at micro-scales and contracted at any attempt to stretch it. Industrially, it was primarily used for data recording, down to the micron-width mimic films. Using it as restraints or garrotes was niche but known. It was used for some engineering purposes as well but they were rather narrow.

Pretty much what Hadrian knew. He carefully and quietly worked to secure the spool while the others chimed in. "If only I knew better whether shigawire is used in ship repair or maintenance."

And then something dawned on Laila. The contracting property was actually a feature of the Ecazi krimskel vine, not the shigawire. Their restraints on Caladan must have been a bioengineered hybrid of both. If it had been 100% shigawire back then, their hands and feet would have been garroted off at the first attempt to free themselves. On the flip side, the original shigawire was likely less inversely responsive to stretching in any way.

And that was it. Then the boarding, sealing the facility, engaging auto-pilot, and off they cruised from the belt toward the white-brown-green orb of Harmonthep!
