She knew what they saw below was a lie, but she could not pierce the veil obscuring what the truth.

While Cuyler was looking down the mountain, Efren for a monent paid more attention to the ground... and caught trail. Not one that descended, but one winding back to the dense volcanic rock formations...

[Using 5 Threat for evil purposes ahead.]

He pointed to the trail and led the group down it with as much caution as could be warranted for the speed they needed to travel in.

[Kannon]

Amid the rocks, they came upon the opening of a lava tube. A stairway leading down, mostly natural and adjusted with lasers in only a few places, offered a way into the mountain...

Efren motioned for the two women to keep their eyes open and follow him towards the entrance.

It was prudent to look around it while they waited for the… signal… to infiltrate made itself manifest.

[Cuyler Gray]

She nodded wordlessly and looked for anything unusual, other than what they'd already seen.

[Kannon]

The outside of the entry into the lava tube was unsheltered and unguarded, just like one would expect either from a spot that was irrelevant or considered impossible to use.

[Efren Lanville]

Well then… it would either be a great place to get in… or an absolutely horrible place. And the only way to figure that out was to go in and see.

So Efren stepped forward to stick himself in the proverbial mystery box.

[Cuyler Gray]

Cuyler continued to watch their surroundings, remembering the hidden eye they'd found.

[Kannon]

The tube was a relatively comfortable descent, as if a potential ascent from the other direction was meant to be comfortable and quick. There was even a dim glowglobe hovering behind one sharper turn to light it up. There was no-one there. Efren progressed without difficulty until something bounced him off. And then again. On closer look, he found some force field extended across the passageway, preventing further move. Perhaps this was the solution that made the user of this tunnel not worry about incursions from this direction...

Sinsei, following behind, cursed under her nose.

"A damn pentashield. Because of course."

[Efren Lanville]

Efren wasn’t familiar with advanced technology. He heard the word ‘shield’ in there, however, and thought perhaps if he moved his hand in slow enough (like a knife through a personal shield) that he could get through…

As he tried his first dumb attempt… he was working on a possible workaround.

[Cuyler Gray]

"That's going to be hard to get around." Cuyler sighed.

[Kannon]

"Cuyler's right. An expensive Ixian toy for paranoid nobility. Only genetic mark calibrated with frequencies disables it. Or tinkering with controls... on the other side. Someone's glorified individual escape route."

Sinsei leaned against the wall.

"Well, fuck."

[Cuyler Gray]

"We could try setting snares or something." She shrugged. "For whoever tries to escape this way."

[Efren Lanville]

“That’s a good idea… We’d need someone to watch the trap afterwards.”

He looked around, “If this is an escape route… An escape vehicle must be nearby, no?”

[Cuyler Gray]

"That makes sense." She nodded. "Let's look around. We can't get past this anyway."

[Kannon]

If anything like that was outside, it was probably superbly hidden.
