Efren nodded. Time was of the essence and they unfortunately needed to make decisions quickly.

"So what do you both think? We could potentially wait here... when things go haywire it is possible the important person for who that is sync'd for could come out... But we need to get in and save the hostages quickly... They may not rush out unless they think everything is going bad in a hurry."

He paused, "The other option is to continue looking for a different entrance. One that the more rank and file might use... Which means more eyes on it. But also easier access..."

"Let's look for another way." She said. "We can return here if needed."

[Kannon]

"Or not, if we get locked in gunfire. We don't know where their detection perimeter starts, only that they think it needless to be here." Sinsei looked around with some paranoia, because it may have been the wrong assumption. "It's a difficult trade-off, secrecy of our position for more knowledge about theirs. I wasn't at that Atreides meeting you had, Corporal, I can't fully say what serves our success better. The person with the bigger picture should decide, and that's you."

Efren recalled the meeting in his mind. Paul seemed to hope for such an opportunity as this, but had made clear that saving the hostages was the top priority.

It was indeed a chance to catch whoever was in charge, and learn more about the people behind this repeated offense… A chance to possibly bring long term security to the region… or at least the first step on that path.

If it was just the three of them… they could easily stay. Apprehend the leader as he escaped in the confusion. Use his body to infiltrate and rescue the hostages…

But there was the thopter pilot who would be parachuting in. To leave a single person by themselves in that position… Would most certainly mean death or capture.

He was being asked to lead… and leading meant making hard decisions. Efren nodded as he made his decision.

“We appear to be in a concealed position now… The next stage of the mission entails the destruction of the camouflage device with the pilot parachuting down to our position.”

He paused, “It is impossible to know where they will land. With any luck the assault on the pass will soon take place, drawing out a significant portion of the enemy to the west.”

“If I get into a tree here… I should be able to observe where those troops are issuing out from and possibly get a glimpse of the parachutist’s landing zone.”

He pointed over towards the hole leading to the forcefield. “When the camouflage comes down, it’s also quite possible that the leader could evacuate out of that tunnel. Capturing him… or even identifying him… could go a long way in solving this problem not only today…. but in the future.”

He finished with a tone of finality, “We stay here and wait for the next stage of the mission.”

Sinsei's both accepted and hated the decision. Logically, it seemed sensible, she herself had encouraged the young Corporal to think in broader terms, but all the same it went against her instincts to seek out every avenue to save her father fast. But she wouldn't be here, this close, without Efren's leadership so she educated herself to rely on it.

Her turmoils somewhat showing on her face, she nodded.

Cuylsr nodded as well. She understood the reasoning, but wished there was more they could do

Efren gave a nod of thanks to the two of them. They were not subordinates… but still were willing to trust him. It meant a lot to the young man and he privately hoped that their trust would not be broken by his actions.

“I’m going to get higher up. Stay down here and conceal yourselves the best you can. If it doesn’t look like anything is happening here, we’ll need to move quickly.”

He reached out an arm to gently clasp Sinsei’s shoulder, “I promise I’ll do whatever I can to save your father.”

After a glance of reassurance, Efren turned to climb a tree to get sight lines over the canopy.

[Kannon]

Sinsei leaned a little bit into that clasp, but then pulled away with a steeling nod. She rechecked the reloading mechanism of the carbine, not looking at Efren as he was leaving. Not directly at least.

"I'm going to take a look around and see if I can spot any other paths we should watch." She gave Sinsei a smile. "Be careful."

Efren would then work his way up and wait for the fireworks to start…

"I will." Sinsei said, finding a spot to keep the lava tube exit at gunpoint.
