"Huh." Bernard looked around as they started to wrap up gathering the gear. "Could have also had a great pilot like we did crash just as smoothly; that's a relief." He looked to the others. "So, might not be so dire as of yet. Shit, be useful to have the comms back up and solve this..." He placed his hand to his face and sighed a little, then removed his hand to look up at the fading sun and the descending merc. "Visiblity is also going down. How far you think that explosion was, Ambrose? 2-3 clicks away?" He then turned to his brother. "Might be better to do it your way in a sense, then, if they're not in a exploding thopter. Depending on the distance and the amount of light left. Although at the very least, we should establish a perimeter around the crash site. Not thrilled we have to do this at the here, but you know what they say about beggers and choosers."

He looked around widely. "At the very least, we need to figure out what we have around the wreckage, as Ambrose said. Let's establish a perimeter in the meantime and hope the others are sturdy enough to stay safe on their own until light comes. Let's say about...no further than a quarter of a kilo out from our crash. Also see if we can find a source of drinkable water or potential plants to consume. Don't want to start dipping into the supplies until we have to."

"Sarge, disregarding there being no evidence of them having crashed, have you considered they might've encountered hostiles? We were coming here to investigate bodies and probable cartel activity.

I don't fancy running off into the jungle either, but we can't leave them on their own. Reconnecting will increase our own chances of making it out of here.

We have a bead on where they are but they probably have no idea where we are. They may not be there anymore if we wait much longer or someone else might get there first or already be there."

He watched in suspense as Laila scaled the canopy. Once back on the ground safe the tension left his body. He then turned to Ambrose and nodded, "I agree with your assessment." He turns back to his brother, "If the price for going is we all go, then let's not waste anymore time."

He didn't like it, but Ambrose was right. His survival training talked about establishing a base came quickly, especially while there were lights, but the risk of those out there would just bother him all night. "Grab what lights we have out now; don't want to fumble with it. Much as we all want to move to them quickly, this sort of environment is not kind to quick steps and fumbling is the last thing we're going to want to do at night."

He looked back to the others. "As I said, mark the path back to this thopter with some clear marks. We're also going to need to find some game trails quickly while we still have natural light. That's going to be our faster way thru this foliage while staying safe and going in a straight line is a fool's errand. So the best tracker we have should take point. If nothing else, then, grab the stuff and let's move."

Ambrose nodded and set to work. He grabbed some webbing and loose gear, things that might help on their jungle adventure. He also made sure that if not he, then someone else was grabbing the antenna. Ideally they would be back in the next day or two, but things rarely went by ideal circumstances.

No side-branches seemed to be a rule among the dendrite vegetation. Which meant traditional quadrupedal tree-hopping predators were unlikely unless they descended from way up high, though who could know what might have taken that niche. The dense perennials of the undergrowth, however, they seemed like hideouts for the hunters.

He began to peruse the scene with incredibly efficiency.

Looking above them, he muttered to Mr. Bravo a bit before addressing the others, "Probably won't be many big predators up in the trees, maybe some flyers up high. Plenty of underbrush for ambush hunters though, keep eyes on the ground."

In his peripheral, Bernard noted a prominent indentation in the ferns. A quick detour in that direction revealed the box with their camping supplies and equipment! Alas, it was broken [2 Threat] and they would have to turn into pack mules for the time being to distribute it effectively among themselves. While thinking on who should carry what, however, he took note of one more thing - the bark of one of the nearby trees seemed to have been intentionally cut in a geometric fashion some time ago, perhaps to harvest the sap.

This jungle might not be so uninhabited after all.

He walked over to the damaged goods and looked down at it, kneeling down at it before looking at the markings of the tree. "Got some good news..." His face turned to the markings on the tree and sighed. "...and some bad news."

"For fuck's sake indeed. Not the predator I was considering, but yeah... We'd best avoid those."

He took an extra moment to look around, "We could keep a lookout for any gear that fell out along the way, so maybe a half an eye on the trees. I'll take point." Ambrose marched into the jungle in the direction of the sound and where they believe the other thopter had landed, gun drawn and shield ready to activate if needed.
