Dance on a Needle [Morning 3]
Re: Dance on a Needle [Morning 3]
Once he did, he would soon find indications of a fatal occurrence in the sunken settlement. Bodies weren't numerous, but present, mostly preserved as decomposing life wasn't abundant in karst lakes except for aquatic millipedes. They looked like members of some remote Muadh community.

He looks for signs of battle among the corpses and ruins, expecting to see the telltale signs of violence. It's possible that they died from disease or illness... but exceedingly unlikely.

He found them while walking along the shores. Both structural damage and some wounds on sunken corpses were bearing marks of laser fire. His instincts, as often, were correct. This community had been eradicated. Only children's faces he could observe the vantage points on the way were locked in a silent scream. Adults had passed with peaceful intensity.

He takes note of what he can and his location to share with the other Muadh and his team. He gives a search to See if he can locate anything out of the ordinary what happened here. A massacre of peaceful villagers that didn't fight back was horrific and out of the ordinary by itself, But not for the cartel. He was mostly looking for clues for why it was done, But was partially assuming that it was simply done when they were grabbing some of the villagers to test drugs on.

That, or clearing their perimeter to secure the obscurity of their operations. Likely both. This Chaen Marek person, if Paul was correct about who was behind it, seemed to be having no compunctions about mass murder.
Perversely, this was making this spot a good hideout. The cartel had no reason to patrol here.
The Caladanan sun was climbing the horizon. It would be noon soon, and Razar was expected to seek communication with other teams so that they could time the assault, provided his cousin Efren would do his job with the antenna.

Razar moved back to the thopter and left the macabre rally point, somewhat unpleasantly hoping to return in the future. But having found it means that they can actually take care of the dead with dignity, and they will know to look for evidence of other such massacres in the future to do so for those as well. An unfortunately grisly task that will need to be handled eventually once the immediate danger has been handled and the living are protected.
