Day 0 | Drinking Night: What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?

It wouldn't be a real festival without drinking. Bonfires are lit, cider and wine and brandy and what-have-you is flowing... Some had started early, falling to the temptation of previously served wines and ciders, some only after lord Lanville had inaugurated the evening with his toast, some only now. Around here, lone drinkers are frowned upon, so do it with friends, have a laugh, tell a story, sing a song!

---

The crowd is split roughly 3 groups: the tipsy, the drunk, and the wasted. You choose which you approach and address with your impromptu performance. Each must be preceded by downing one. It can be a story, a joke, or a song. Please provide the actual lyrics or the story or the joke in your post, and adjust the content to the audience, I'll be reading them and reacting accordingly with the crowd, mismatch will have consequences!

If you perform for the tipsy, the roll is Charm, and difficulty is Hard. The group is still quite discerning and favouring moderation, and contains a number of young people who want to keep energies for dancing and perhaps something else if they are impressed. Success meets applause, and failure meets polite claps. Triumph and Despair generate GM-crafted results.

If you perform for the drunk, they are ready for more juicy performances, but also interrupt all the time. The roll is Leadership or Negotiation to get to the end of what you're about to present without being bogged down by those who know the lyrics or the ending better. Success meets toasts and cheers and strong encouragements to join the heavy drinking, failure meets even stronger, practically irresistible encouragements to join the heavy drinking. Triumph and Despair generate GM-crafted results, both rather rowdy.

If you perform for the wasted, they take pretty much monosyllables as extremely funny and reason for more drinking, both yours and theirs. The roll is Discipline and the difficulty is Easy, but upgraded. The success means you've performed, got recognition among the true drunkards, and was somehow able to step away. Failure means you joined them and this is all you remember. Triumph or Despair mean epic things happen thereafter which you won't remember, but others will!

Advantages and Threats can be used for fluff editing audience reactions.

The best and the worst performances will write themselves down in the collective memory of the community and will be the subject of much referencing thereafter.

[This is the last thread of pregame chronologically, covering time after nightfall, so you can get drunk here without impact for other threads.]

As all knew, this was Roger's favourite part of the celebrations. He was a passable baliset player and had a good baritone. At some point he sat on the chopping block, drank richly from his wine glass, and smirked.

"Gurney's not around this time, but it doesn't mean he can't be heard. Hmm, how was it... hmmm... I think I have it."

Orchards and vineyards,
And full breasted houris,
And a cup overflowing before me.
Why do I babble of battles,
And mountains reduced to dust?
Why do I feel these tears?

Heavens stand open
And scatter their riches;
My hands need but gather their wealth.
Why do I think of an ambush,
And poison in molten cup?
Why do I feel my years?

Love's arms beckon
With their naked delights,
And Eden's promise of ecstasies.
Why do I remember the stars,
Dream of old transgressions…
And why do I sleep with fears?

Roger seemed to be lacking Gurney's emotional persuasion and he delivered it without personal touch, more like a tribute to the author.

"Why not the Flaming Dames! Who's goin' sing that one!" More drunk parts of the audience called.

No time to flake out!

The wine race was'nt great but at least she made her fishing village proud with the culinary event.

Now it was drinking time and she would take the beast by the horns. Her liver was roaring for a challenge and she would not let it down! While this was only alcohol, building resistance to it was necessary in her line of work. Can't have a sailor who can't drink the fancy folks under the table! No ma'am!

And thus she went straight for the wasted

''Hey! How do you call a well dressed tuna?'' she paused ''A fishionista! HA! Get it? Fish-ionista. That's right I'm a genius.''

She'd drink with them for a while, fishing for more puns

That's right, that's another one

As his father finished and the crowd begged for a rendition of Flaming Dames, some of Efren's more drunken subordinates pushed him forward.

"Alright! Alright!" He said with a smile as he raised up his hands.

"Listen up or you'll miss the fun!" He smiled. "Sing with me if you know the words!"

He then began in his clearest voice to sing:

Deep in the jungle where the sun don’t rise or set,
There's a village of dames you'll never forget,
With sequined gowns and fiery manes,
Here they come, the Flaming Dames!

Flaming Dames, Flaming Dames,
Lighting up the night with their wild, wild flames,
Flaming Dames, Flaming Dames,
Setting hearts on fire; and ne'er be tame!

They’ve hearts of gold and eyes that shine,
Their laughter’s loud, and their humor’s fine,
They dance around, a sight to see,
Like an inferno, wild and free!

Flaming Dames, Flaming Dames,
Lighting up the night with their wild, wild flames,
Flaming Dames, Flaming Dames,
Setting hearts on fire; and ne'er be tame!

They save the day and steal the show,
With a fiery kiss, you're ready to go.
When they roll through town, you know it's true,
The Flaming Dames are coming for you!

Flaming Dames, Flaming Dames,
Lighting up the night with their wild, wild flames,
Flaming Dames, Flaming Dames,
Setting hearts on fire; and ne'er be tame!

So if you see a blaze in the night,
Don’t be alarmed, it’s just their light,
The Flaming Dames are on their way,
So run to them without delay!

His rendition was suitable enough as many people joined in signing... essentially drowning him out near the end. As the song ended he was engulfed back into the crowd where the revelry continued on without distraction.

Tipsy? Right. No. Screw those serene little bastards.
Drunk? ABSOLUTELY not. Still a bit too refined.

So Laila went to find, well... they weren't her people.

Nobody here was her people.

She didn't really have people anymore.

God that was sad. So FUCKING sad.

She opened her mouth to tell someone why she was on a thrice-fucked world she had no ties to, why she was there by herself, why, nearly three years in she hadn't really adjusted, why it had been a mistake, why leaving Ecaz had been the only real choice, her whole sad, miserable self-pitying saga.

And then she put a bottle to her lips and took a swig instead.

Nobody wanted to hear that shit. Not even these absolutely hammered boozehounds.

Razar has a long recollection of the times he's seen other family members participate in this tradition many times. He generally might lean into his talents, but on this particular night he just relaxes and does his best to keep the group following on track with his joke. More than a few of them have probably heard it.

"An elderly man owned a large farm for several years and he had a large pond on the far end of his property. It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond since he hadn't been there for a while. He grabbed a big white bucket to bring back some fruit before starting the long walk to the remote area.

As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was several young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence, and they all went to the deep end.

One of the women shouted to him, We're not coming out until you leave!

The old man frowned. I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked. Holding the bucket up, he said, I'm here to feed the crocodile. Some old men can still think fast."

She didn't say anything, but there was a guy who looked at her, nodded in sagely semi-stupor in acknowledgement of all she didn't say, and gave her the good stuff. They would drink in empathetic silence until the stars suddenly took a break from shining.

Some younger people snickered or giggled, but one of the soldiers called out:

"Oh, come on, Razar! Isn't it the same one you told three years ago? It's enough time to make up something we haven't heard."

They quickly moved on to listening to someone's story, except for one girl who approached him with an offer of cider. It was Suri, a cidrit maker's daughter. Her rosy cheeks indicated she had already had some courage booster. Razar could remember her as a teen, but time flies.

"Have you ever seen an ocean of sand? Imagine sand as far as you can see. No water. No vegetation. Just waves of sand and a few desolate islands of rock. A vast desert under scorching heat. But, there is life there."

"I'm not referring to small rodents or lizards scurrying about, though they are there as well. I speak of massive creatures dwelling within the depths of the sands. They lurk below, waiting for something to cross the dunes above them. Once such prey appears, they move fast, burrowing just beneath the sands at speeds unbelievable for their size."

Cuyler thrust an open hand towards the sky.

"They erupt from below like a breaching whale, their maws already open eighty meters wide and lined with crystal teeth, each as sharper than any knife. They swallow whatever was in their path whole, even stretching towards the sky to snap at anything above. Then, they drop back into the sands and vanish into the depths, leaving only the scent of cinnamon."

After hearing the baliset tune Hadrian's mind drifted. He completely tuned out Flaming Ladies and sat sipping on his wine contentedly. Then at some point after a while an old drinking song got stuck in his head. A few raised eyebrows began turning his way prompting him to smile and sing,

"Oh! From the inlets plashy bank
Where the sedge grows green and rank,
and the twisted woodbine springs,
winding away from the Sea of Kings.

On the dim and misty lakes
Gloriously the morning breaks,
And the eagle's on his cloud
As the fisher boats sail on proud"

The song might not have fit the vibe but there's no denying it's catchy. While some didn't sing, a few still did, until Hadrian's voice became drowned out. Mostly by the drunks rather than the tipsy crowd.

Up, up, the river winds.
Up, stretch, poplar and pine.
Hear the call o'er hill & dale
Where wine pours and trumpets hail

Sing, sing, the Atreides theme
Join, let your voices ring
Then when the Duke will call
The Southerners are standing tall

Drink, drink, brothers, drink | Raise a glass for Vorian
Drink, drink, sisters, drink | And the cause Butlerian
Fill your goblets full | Spite the coward Harkonnen
Drink until you cannot stand | And may you die on Caladan!

Roger took note of Hadrian's song and saluted him with his drink afterwards even as the crowd he'd addressed might have been looking for something less patriotic and more entertaining.

Efren raised his glass as Hadrian finished his song.

He raised his voice along with a small contingent of servicemen all sporadically calling out "Atreides!" in half-drunken merriment.

Cuyler's story left quite a few in awe, agape. The universe was vast but the monsters she described seemed very terrifying even compared to all other possible monsters, including those on Caladan. Especially here, for all people who knew nothing but great oceans for whole of their lives, endless desert seemed to be stretching their imagination into headache.
